3 Sure Signs That It's Time for a Change

Change is rarely easy. Everything inside us resists it, and we fight back. We convince ourselves that now simply isn't the right time for a change. When my child leaves home…, when the weather gets warmer…, in the new year… Does any of this sound familiar?

The right moment

We often stand in our own way. There is no perfect moment to make a change. At some point you reach a stage where you realise: "enough is enough – I need to do something differently." That may be something personal, something related to your career, connected to your diet, or it may simply be a matter of getting your time management back on track.

When is the right moment? What are the signs that it is time to make a change?

1. You generally feel at ease, yet somehow restless

If you do the same thing day after day, it may be time to shake things up a little.

Healthy routines in your daily life are no bad thing, but too much monotony can slowly erode your zest for life. Always being in the same environment, doing the same things over and over, and spending time with the same people can cause us to stagnate. There is no growth in the comfort zone, and there is no comfort in the growth zone.

If excitement is lacking in your life and your energy levels are low, it may be time to make a fundamental change. This happens to most people at some point. You are not alone in this situation – and more importantly, it is a completely normal and natural part of life.

Pro tip: Major changes rarely happen overnight. So if you're not yet ready to make a sweeping change in your life, perhaps start by doing things a little differently in smaller areas than you normally would.

Start with simple things like a new recipe, a new restaurant, a new hobby, or a visit to a city you have never been to before. Where possible, try to spend more time with people who energise and inspire you. A change in one area of your life can trigger further changes in others – both professionally and personally. Change makes you more adaptable, exposes you to new experiences and people, and opens doors to greater opportunities. Often, change takes on a momentum of its own – but you have to start somewhere.

2. You long for a sense of purpose

Do you leap out of bed every morning full of energy, or is the snooze button on your alarm clock your best friend?

Do you spend a lot of time on Netflix, social media, or other unproductive activities? These could be signs that it is time to rediscover your purpose in life. You are not the same person today that you were 15 years ago. But are you still living the same life, day in, day out? Our attitudes, aspirations, and we ourselves change over time – which is why we must continually seek new ways to find meaning in what we do. Taking time to reflect can be helpful, but so can continuously developing yourself personally (and professionally).

Pro tip: To reignite your sense of purpose, set aside time each day and commit to doing something new. Something truly new.

Set aside time to do something good for yourself: sport, spending time in nature, learning a new skill, talking with friends. Breathing. Or doing something good for someone else: giving someone a smile, helping someone cross the street, listening to a friend in need, getting involved in a club. Breaking out of your usual routine is no easy undertaking. It is not about doing something new for hours every day. That would be unrealistic. Set yourself achievable goals and stick with them. Every day, one small step at a time.

Because lasting fulfilment belongs to those who continually seek new paths.

3. You feel like it's already too late for everything

Sometimes we forget that we have the power to change things

When we have been stuck in the monotony and routine of our tasks for a long time, feel intellectually understimulated, or have stopped developing ourselves personally or professionally, it can be difficult to hold on to the knowledge that we are the sole masters of our own lives. Change helps us to learn, grow, and stay motivated. When you make active decisions, you take control of your life and your destiny.

Pro tip: If the word "change" leaves you feeling paralysed, try looking at the new actions you have in mind from a different angle.

What do you want to gain for your future? What would you like to make room for? What enrichments are you hoping for? When a house feels too small, we build an extension. You could look at your life in the same way. What would you like to "add on" in order to make room for more?

Did this article have you nodding along? Perhaps it is time for you to write a new chapter in your life? Whatever may be holding you back, don't waste another moment. You have the power to change every aspect of your life.

But you have to start with the first steps.
